Building Well: Pioneering Health and Well-being in Construction

In this week's blog, we unveil how BPM is committed to transforming the construction industry by prioritising health and well-being. As one of the first project management companies in New Zealand to establish a well-being package as a basic requirement for those who work with us, this is a topic that's central to our thoughts and processes.

Here we will explore our initiatives that not only raise the bar for safety standards but also foster a culture where the well-being of every individual is paramount. It's not just about building good sh*t; it's about building a better, healthier industry.

The Foundation of Well-being

Like our partners at Site Safe, we believe that the backbone of any successful construction project isn't just the concrete or steel—it's the people. That's why we're so committed to health and well-being. From the earliest planning stages to the final touches of construction, we’re ensuring that every decision made is filtered through the lens of putting people first. That's both our team and the people we work with.

Our Contractor Wellness Package is something we are very proud of and was introduced to further position contractors as part of our extended team. Going back to 2019, we also introduced a Contractor Wellness Survey to give the people working on our project sites a voice to communicate with us about their own well-being and what we can do together, as a team, to improve the overall well-being of our projects.

Elevating Safety Standards

We know safety on a construction site goes beyond hard hats and high-visibility jackets. It's about creating an environment that anticipates potential hazards and actively works to prevent them. At BPM, we don’t just aim to meet industry safety standards; we're pushing beyond them to set the bar. Our safety protocols are living documents, constantly updated with the latest research and best practices. We're committed to leading the charge in making the construction industry as safe as it possibly can be.

Cultivating a Supportive Atmosphere

But it's not enough to stop at safety; we also nurture the mental and emotional well-being of our team. Stress and burnout are as much a risk as physical injury, so we foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages open dialogue and regular check-ins. That's why we support our team with mental health first response training. Making sure that our team can notice if they are struggling is crucial, and a big reason we foster so much priority in our team’s education around mental health awareness.

Innovative Well-being Initiatives

It’s not just our people whose well-being we invest in. We’re working with the Tasman District Council to build safer urban spaces by introducing and revamping cycle paths. Key intersections are being redesigned across Motueka for enhanced pedestrian and cyclist safety.
