Well-being, Done Well.

At BPM we do it well, whether that's looking after your project or looking after people

After seeing the benefits first-hand of a well-being programme BPM decided to take it to the projects we manage and became the first project management company in New Zealand to establish a well-being package as a basic requirement for those who work alongside us.

Our Contractor Wellness Package was introduced to further position contractors as part of our extended team and is a part of the BPM tender process as a non-price attribute. In May 2019, we also introduced a Contractor Wellness Survey to give the people working on our project sites a voice to communicate with us on their own well-being and what we can do together, as a team, to improve the overall well-being of our projects.

Awarded the Leadership in Construction Safety Award from Site Safe NZ

Following that success, we have taken on an advisory role with other contractors, consultants and clients to help them improve their own places of work. We supply information and are available for consultation and as a problem-solver. by supplying information, advice and materials as well as just being available for conversation and consultation, rather than dictating a singular ‘one size fits all solution’. This approach has led the BPM team being available to contractors and clients as a problem-solving resource. Our long-term goal is to break the stigma in constriction and expand safety beyond physical safety on-site, to change the culture in construction and make it OK to not feel OK. We're committed to expanding staff safety beyond physical safety on-site and to change the construction culture and aims to function as a role model and bring a change to construction culture.

In November 2019, we were awarded the Leadership in Construction Safety award from Site Safe NZ for this initiative and our commitment to improving the well-being of others on our sites.

Committed to expanding staff safety beyond physical safety on-site

We are a Mental Health First Aid certified business which provides the team with the skills and awareness to assist someone experiencing mental distress in the workplace, understand early intervention and long-term support strategies, and how to look after ourselves while supporting others.. As well as safety first aid training, if a mental health crisis occurs onsite the team is equipped with the tools to manage and prevent crises.

Each employee also participates in our Health and Well-being Programme. Currently this includes initiatives like:

  • participating in physical activity at least three times a week as a team, during the work week

  • prioritising mental health including meditating daily, participating in Hygge awareness exercises and challenges

  • setting personal goals that are unrelated to work as part of business KPI’s

  • completing safety, and mental health certifications – both legislative requirements, and additional courses such as the CoLiberate Mental Health First Aid course

Twice yearly we also participate in team physical goals such as health and fitness challenges and charity sponsorship fitness events.

We love the results of our programme which has our teams and our projects operating as a connected family unit, who support each other professionally and personally to achieve the high standards we set for ourselves.

BPM is proud to be an organisation creating a positive impact to our community. We're proud to be an organisation that is changing people’s lives for the better.

While placing emphasis on the betterment of mental health within our business, at BPM we also have a nationally recognised safety system. Our team all hold Site Safe certification and our business maintains Sitewise Gold Accreditation.

Wellbeing in Construction by BPM

A new initiative by BPM.

Due to the ongoing rise of suicide rates in the construction industry, it was clear something needed to be done. The she’ll be right attitude that pressures men working in the industry to “be a man” and “suck it up” was only adding numbers to the statistic. We needed an attitude adjustment. This is where Wellbeing in Construction by BPM comes in. They maybe “alright” but they also may just need someone to check in to realise that, actually sharing the load isn’t such a bad thing. Wellbeing in Construction considers every point of helping someone’s wellbeing and what can affect their physical and mental health.
