268 -270 Ferry Road | Seismic Upgrade
Project Type: Project Management, Cost Management
Quantity Surveyor: Dan Woods
Location: Christchurch
BPM successfully managed a significant seismic upgrade of a retail complex on Ferry Road in Christchurch, spanning four tenancies – two occupied and two vacant – bringing the buildings up to 67% NBS (New Building Standard).
Extensive planning was required to allow the existing bakery and pharmacy to continue trading throughout construction, with careful coordination around public safety, access, and sequencing of works.
The project presented several challenges, including staging around active tenancies and managing groundwater issues during foundation works, but the team navigated these effectively to deliver a strong result.
Key works completed included:
Installation of heavy structural steel within the suspended ceiling space, including PFC walers, Reid and fly bracing, and roof compression struts
Removal of existing slabs and installation of new, larger foundations integrated with the original structure
Installation of steel brackets to strengthen existing structural elements
Upgrades to accessible routes and carpark areas, improving safety and usability for all visitors
