Victoria University of Wellington | MaClaurin Lecture Theatre Refurbishment

Client: Victoria University
Project Type: Community, Education, Advisory
Project Manager: Dan Bradley, Nicholas Rowe
Location: Wellington, New Zealand

BPM is proud to have been appointed as Project Manager for the refurbishment of MaClaurin Lecture Theatre 102 at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington, an in-use teaching space that has to be handed back on a fixed date for the start of the 2027 academic year.

MaClaurin Lecture Theatre 102 is a large tiered lecture theatre that is showing its age. The University wanted it refreshed so that it feels better to teach and study in, with new finishes, better lighting, power at every seat and improved safety, without disturbing the rest of a busy campus. The theatre has to be fully operational for the start of teaching in 2027.

BPM is managing the project for the University from scope through to handover. That includes:

  • Developing the scope of works and tender documentation

  • Running the main contractor procurement, including site visits and tender evaluation

  • Reviewing the contractor's methodology, programme and health and safety system before mobilisation

  • Sequencing works around the academic calendar, campus events and live occupied spaces

  • Monitoring programme, quality and safety through to handover

The MaClaurin Lecture Theatre 102 refurbishment will give the space a full refresh, starting with the seating. All seats, desks and frames will be removed for refurbishment, with the seats reupholstered and the framing stripped back and refinished. The desktops will be refurbished to a durable, anti-graffiti black surface. Existing flooring will be uplifted and replaced with new carpet tiles throughout, giving the space a durable, consistent finish. Slip resistant nosings will be installed on all stairs to improve safety. Obsolete light fittings will be replaced to match those already upgraded and to work with the existing dimming system. A design and build electrical solution will provide a power point for every two seats, concealed as far as practicable and designed for future maintenance. For safety and accessibility, new stainless-steel handrails will be installed. The ceiling will be cleaned, patched and painted, with walls and stair risers also getting a fresh repaint.

We’re looking forward to working alongside the wider project team to bring Victoria University a new look, fit for purpose lecture theatre ready for the next gen of students rolling through it’s doors.
